Where do you guys think is the best place to get started? I started with the Young Jedi Knights series when I was younger, but the most universal place is the Thrawn Trilogy. The Thrawn Trilogy is supposed to be "classic" but I enjoy the New Jedi Order more. If you don't want to commit to a whole series, I love Allegiance and Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor.

I heard another good place is the Rogue Squadron.

I'm reading Thrawn Trilogy now. It's really good. I also just bought TFU with a giftcard that I got for Christmas, so I'm eager to read that too. I'm reading Dark Force Rising, but then I had to read something else for school, and now I'm finally getting to pick it up again. It's a great book. I got The Last Command for Christmas, so I'm ready to finish it!!!

I agree, Amaranthine. I am digging my way through the NJO books while taking breaks to read TFU II and the Hand of Thrawn Duelogy. But I first read some YJK and The Thrawn Trilogy books.

I started with the books that caught my eye (The Courtship of Princess Leia is the first one I remember reading). I read a few other books, but then decided to go to the very beginning.

I'm slowly making my way through the timeline. Slowly. I keep having to go back and read the books that were released after I passed their spot in the timeline.

I had no idea where to begin when it came to the EU. So I ended up just randomly picking a book in the store and started reading. I began with the Fate of the Jedi series, which was probably not the best place to start, and what made it even worse was that I didn't even start with the first book, I started with the second. So as far as the EU goes, I get most of my info from Wookieepedia.Very Happy

Is Heir to the Empire good? I also heard from a friend that Shadows of the Empire was good. I haven't read any of the EU so I'm counting on y'all to lead me in the right direction.

I think that Heir to the Empire is kinda the best place to start because fan websites I saw seems to think so.. But I started with X-Wing novels and continued in order from there. May be starting from books around the end of Return of the Jedi is good.. Smile

PostSubject: What is the best Star Wars book to star out with?   Where to get started on the Expanded Universe. Icon_minitimeThu Oct 13, 2011 6:34 am

I've seen all these published star wars books in our library, and I think I just might be ready to delve in. Never mind I'm an OT gal. Question to the big star warsies: What is the best one for a beginner of the EU?? There is so much of them, that I get confused on which ones are good, and which ones ain't.

Well, if you know the basic plot of the EU, I'd say start with the Thrawn Trilogy. I'm reading it now and it all makes sense because I sort of know what happens.

If you don't know anything about the EU, I'd say read Truce at Bakura. This picks up right after ROTJ. My mom just read it and said it make perfect sense.

Either way, I think you'll love the EU. I'm really starting to love EU because I'm learning more about Han, Leia, Luke, and Mara as characters.

Thanks! I can get it free from Paperbackswap.com, so that is probably what I'll do. I have 5 book credits burning holes in my screen ANYWAY, so what better way to spend them, then on Star Wars? lol
