Banner Design Contest!

It’s time to change our TLF banner, and that means another banner design contest!

We’re going to do things a bit differently, and instead of having the mods decide the winners, we’re going to have everyone vote on the submissions and pick! This means that all the submissions will be displayed anonymously and you cannot tell anybody which submission is yours, or share them with anybody outside of the contest managers(us). This is to make things fair for everybody.



Contest Guidelines:

1. Submission period starts tomorrow, Tuesday, July 31st and lasts through Tuesday, August 7th. During this time you may work on your submissions and submit them.

2. Voting period starts on Thursday, August 9th and ends on Wednesday, August 15th. During this time the submissions will be displayed and will be up for voting.

I am extending it another week(till the 17th) because you are being shy about sending in your entries! I know we have a lot more talented graphic designers that aren't sending in entries!


3. Submit all entries by PM to Amaranthine or Jedi~Chick. RachelisaJedi is out of town and will not be able to collect entries. You may also email submissions to amaranthine@linglink.com, but this email address has been having trouble, and if you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, send by PM.

4. The winner’s banner will be displayed for a minimum of 2.5 weeks.

Submission Guidelines:

1. All submissions must be JPG or JPEG images.

2. The current banner size is 671 by 342 pixels. The maximum size we will allow is 700 by 360 pixels and the minimum size is 600 by 360 pixels. All over- or under- sized entries will receive a notification and a chance to resubmit.

3. All images used must not fall under copyright: Acceptable sources: Star Wars and The Clone Wars screencaps, images from all Star Wars books and book covers, and official concept art. Not acceptable: Deviantart, cosplay, and all fan-made images without written permission.

4. The more neutral and sophisticated the better. Stay away from loud, crowded images or too-fancy fonts. No bright annoying colors like hot pink and neon and lime green.

5. All submitted banners must contain the words “The Lakehouse Forums”. They must also include the motto “A place for girls to talk about Star Wars, life, and anything else in a Christian environment” and the verse 3 John 1:5, either in reference or in full.

6. All banners must be Star Wars themed.

7. Obviously, no profanity, or crude images/words in any submissions.

Voting Guidelines:

1. No telling anybody which submission is yours or showing them your submissions ahead of time. We cannot control what is shared outside of TLF so this will have to be on the honor system. This rule is the only way to keep it completely fair for everybody, so please abide by it.

2. The submissions will be displayed anonymously, in random order, and with no comments/endorsements by any of the mods/admins.

3. No telling anybody which submission you voted for. Same reason as #1.

4. You may vote for yourself.

5. The mods/admins reserve the right to veto the winning submission if we feel it doesn’t line up with the atmosphere/tastes of TLF.

I was wondering; how do screencaps from TCW, images from all SW books, and official concept art not fall under copyright? I am thinking of entering, but this contest goes against my personal graphic design guidelines. (using images I don't own and aren't in the public domain, to name one...)

Pink, we use what we call a "disclaimer" It simply states that TLF does not own or operate under the authority of Lucasfilm Ltd. and we don't take ownership for any work that isn't original. So if someone DREW a picture, then that's their art, but since we haven't drawn screencaps from TCW, it falls under the disclaimer of it not being ours. See? So you can legally use the Star Wars logo and other characters/items/etc, without falling under copyright. Hope this helps!

All the Star Wars images from the movies, books, and TLF. fall under the Creative Commons license which allows artists to use those images/clips for art, criticism, display, fan activities, etc. (pretty much all nonprofit activities.) It's the same reason big sites like Wookieepedia also use those images in their articles, most fan works/creations also use images from Star Wars on a regular basis under that license as well.

It's the same reason people can make fan videos with clips from the movies/TCW, write fanfiction using Star Wars characters, etc. without falling under copyright. Or else no one could use any Star Wars images/clips every except Lucasfilm and those who purchased the images, and fan creations would be a lot harder(and less fun)!

Same goes for most franchises like Harry Potter, etc.

So, do we vote tomorrow? Or is tomorrow the final submission day?? I wanna see everyone else's banners!!! :DDD XD

I'm going to try and make something, but I've been everywhere lately so I can't promise anything. I've got two days.

Today is the 15th, and the 16th. Amar said there was an extra week on the 9th when it was originally supposed to end. I hope you get to make one in time SWF!!!

Me too, I was going to start a few days ago but have been really busy. I have a concept, hopefully it works!

I finished on time and my entry has been submitted! I can't wait to see all the submissions!

So when does the voting begin? I can't wait to see the submissions!
