| Girls, I need some advice. I've liked photography for a long time. It's something I really love and would like to major in someday. However, I feel like if I want to major in photography, I really need to start getting very serious about it. I mean, I take pictures all the time and I invested in a nice camera and stuff, but I really don't know just a ton about photography, I don't have a photo editing program, and I really don't know what to do next to get more serious about it. I took some classes a year or so ago, but they don't teach those classes anymore, and I haven't been able to find anywhere else in town where I can take classes. Do you have any advice on how to get more serious and learn more about photography? | |

| There should be classes at the community college near you! Your school's art teacher should be able to help you as well.
Also, a lot of photography college programs would like portfolio submissions, so you could start saving some of your favorite pictures you've taken!

| My advice? Shoot more than you usually do. Shoot shoot shoot until your creativity is maxed out. Follow websites online like PetaPixal and This Is Colossal for inspiration or ideas to keep you going. Read...a lot! Read as many photography books as you can get your hands on. Read biographies on current photographers about how they made it big in the industry. If you can, find a mentor who can teach you even more than you should know or already know about your camera. Master the basics of composition and lighting first! Then look for resources on how to get a portfolio together and taking the next step after that.
Word of advice from a professional photographer that I have gotten? Don't get a degree in photography. Shocking, right?! I didn't know how to take this when Preston Mack told me. But it makes sense! I've switched my degree from photography to business right now because I realize that I can't make a decent living off photography, even though that's my passion. So right now I'm going to keep photography as a hobby, but still working on it as much as I possibly can. I'm hoping someday in the future my business/marketing skills can help promote my photography so that can turn into my main career!

| Probably UCF or UF, that's what I've been thinking of. I can't afford an out of state college so I'm staying local. | |

| yeah I can see what all of you are saying. I want to start learning about photography. Right now I just have a cheap camera and an eye for beauty. But I'm ok with that. Photography is a huge passion of mine and maybe I'll do something with it but not as a main job or whatever. | |

| I think one really important factor is to learn and understand the manual functions on a camera. Anyone can throw a camera on "auto" and take great pictures. It takes learning and practice to master how to judge lighting conditions and exposure in order to create a great photo. I've challenged myself this year to only shoot full manual settings, which means I have to set the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture myself. It's difficult sometimes and annoying when I want to take pictures quickly or the lighting is changing fast, but the photos turn out exactly how I envision them. | |

| Thanks for all the wonderful advice! That definitely helped me a lot! I'm excited for summer to get here because my goal for the summer is to improve my photography I'm already working on what I'm going to do for my portfolio for when I'm a senior I have several ideas with using photographs and other art media, and I can't wait to get started! I'm also planning to study other things besides photography I really want to go into film, and I'm hoping to use photography with that, like directing camera angles and stuff on a movie, but I'm also planning on studying something else if film and photography don't work out. I'm not really sure what else I'll study, but I still have plenty of time to decide before I'm in college. Thank you again! I appreciate you taking time to give me advice! | |
