Subject: No EU in new Star Wars films... Sat Apr 26, 2014 9:08 am
Ok, so apparently George Lucas announced yesterday that the new Star Wars movies would have nothing to do with the EU...
BUT, according to Entertainment Weekly today, "The Expanded Universe will still exist under a new 'Legends' banner, which I guess could mean that, within the continuity of the actual canon, the Expanded Universe stories were actually just 'legends' about Luke Skywalker and Co., conceived by people in the Star Wars galaxy many centuries later — which is the kind of completely insane explanation that all conversations about fictional continuity eventually dissolve into."

I already pretty much figured this would be the case. I think it's a good move. Besides, the scripts for the new movies were already worked on by Lucas before Disney bought Star Wars. I'd rather have something coming from Lucas than a movie based on the books (the books just didn't ever feel like Star Wars to me).
I know I've been harsh on the EU in the past, but I've come around and I acknowledge them as an important part of Star Wars history, even if I don't consider them canon. They did get fans through the 10+ years when there were no Star Wars movies, they have lent some ideas to the movies, and I know that lots of people like them, so I respect that.
However, I also think that the new movies will be better off with new, fresh ideas, and I think the EU reboot will be a good thing too. It will make sure that the books are closer in canon to the films. I'm not sure if I'll ever really be into Star Wars books, but I think it would be better if they were closer to the films and each other, because the old EU sometimes had some canon problems.
It makes me a bit sad that people are so upset about this that they refuse to see the new Star Wars movies. Can't you just enjoy both? Consider both canon! It's ok! The Star Wars universe doesn't have to be lined up to where certain things are canon and anything that goes against them isn't. Just enjoy what you like! Give the new movies a chance! We don't even know anything about them yet! They could be amazing!
It's just like the Marvel movies. Obviously they aren't going to follow the comic books, heck, the Avengers movie didn't even have all of the original Avengers in it (they left out Ant Man and Wasp and added Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow). But guess what! It was still an awesome movie! And on the topic of Marvel, even the comic books aren't in perfect canon with each other. There are like a million and one different comic book universes and canons. Personally (and I assume most other fans do this), I don't even worry about the canon. I just read which comic books look good and enjoy the tv shows and movies and just enjoy the fandom as a whole.
I can understand being upset about this; I was upset when the Clone Wars was canceled. But it's no reason for someone to refuse to watch the new Star Wars movies, especially when we don't even know what the plot will be. Give everything a chance. If you watch the new movies and don't like them, that's one thing, but it's not fair to hate them before we even know what they'll be about.
This is a good time for Star Wars! We're getting new movies! It's exciting! So just have fun! The EU books will still be in print and you can still enjoy them, plus we're getting a lot of new books to enjoy! Just because something is changing doesn't mean it will be bad. Just give everything a chance.

I counted two, but if the film is good, I'm really not going to care if there's more guys than girls.
I had to google most of those actors because I'd never heard for them before, but that's a good thing, I think, I'm glad they didn't cast anyone huge, like Benedict Cumberbatch. I'm happy with the cast, actually! I'm really glad they're bringing back the OT actors, even though everyone thought they would already. It's nice to have it confirmed.

Yay! Finally!!!
I don't know any of the people, but that's good, in my opinion. I'd rather them use lesser known actors. It's also great to have the original group back! I can't wait!!!!

I'm having a lot of emotions about this...XD What about all the epicness and tears and worry and feelz?? You're telling me that was all MADE UP D: (I mean, they're all made up, but made up IN CANON too?) What about Jaina and Jag, my OTP that dated for SIXTEEN YEARS and just got married in the last book QwQ and now they're not canon D; NOOOO

I heard that too, IDK if there's any truth to that, though. Hope so.

I'm decently happy with the cast. They all look like they'd fit into the SW universe well. Plus Andy Serkis! I'm both happy and sad about him being cast. But whatever. We'll see what happens:)

Twitter practically exploded this morning when it was officially announced that Star Wars Episode VII has an official title:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
So, what do y'all think of this title?
I actually heard (not confirmed though) that the title is not supposed to have "Episode VII" in it in order to distance itself from the PT... but that's just what I heard.

Interesting! I'm honestly not sure what to think at this point. I'm withholding judgment until I can see a trailer.

Wise choice.
Jedi~Chick and I were joking about the title on Twitter, coming up with other titles as "The Force Falls Back Asleep" and "The Force Presses "Snooze" on the Alarm Clock"; but honestly, I think the title sounds cool (even my sister, who isn't a fan of SW, thought the title sounded cool). I'm sure that there'll be other people who are gonna criticize it later on, but on first glance, I think it sounds cool. I think it's better than "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" (personally, I liked the possibly title of "The Hobbit: Into the Fire" much better)

I think it sounds pretty cool! I'm getting more and more excited about the movie every day I'm still kind of upset about the EU thing, but I think the movies are going to be great! (And yeah, The Hobbit: Into the Fire sounds much better xD)

I found it on Ashley's facebook page and watched it twice before running to my brother and showing him. I'm so excited! But it dose look just a tad bit like a fanfilm, but with JJ Abrams making this I'm sure it'll be great, the look of it is amazing. I seriously want to know who the girl on the speeder was!!! DECEMBER CAN'T COME ANY QUICKER!!!!

It looks awesome!!! I'm really excited, and it was sooo cool to see Star Wars done with the latest special effects! Am I the only one who thought of the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars film when the guy in the trailer ignited his lightsaber?

What happened to me is I totally forgot that the trailer was coming out on Friday, so it was like 8 at night and I was at the theater watching Big Hero 6 and the commercials were about to start and it reminded me that I forgot to watch the Star Wars trailer! Unfortunately it isn't showing at my theater, which would have been convenient, so I grabbed my phone and looked it up in the middle of the other trailers going on. I couldn't hear the audio, though, so I had to wait until I got home XD
But anyways, it was all pretty much normal happy feelings until they showed the Millennium Falcon, and then my stomach did a little flip and I just wanted to jump up and cheer. I still get chills every time I see the Millennium Falcon in the trailer!!!
It was interesting how some parts feel very Star Wars-y (the desert planet and the look of the droid and X-wings) while some feel very modern (the shot of the stormtroopers and the shot of the guy walking in the woods). I'm hoping this will mean that it will have the same thing that made the other Star Wars movies great but with some new ideas added in to keep things fresh.
